The ride
You will soon learn that Mongolia is a beautiful country with the kindest people. We ride about 95% off-road on this itinerary - from big city Ulaanbaatar to the remotest regions. You can see the rare bactrian camel on the way to the mini Gobi desert where you can play in deep sand. Then we are off through the ancient steppes and over to near the western border. We end with 2 days of watching the eagle hunters work their craft in the national competition.
Day 1
Arrival in Ulaanbaatar. We will pick you up from the airport and take you to the hotel to get refreshed. There will be a safety briefing and dinner with the crew.
Day 2 - 220mi
UB to Bayam Govi in Övökhangai. Today is a long day of pavement and a little bit of sand. Around 75% on-road just to get out of the city into the most incredible wild lands you’ll ever see. Retiring in a Ger camp.
Day 3 - 125mi
In the morning we go play in sand dunes. That’s why we are here, the baby Gobi. Afterward, you have an opportunity to ride the infamous Bacitran camels across the way. We make our way to Orkhon National Park and Waterfalls via Karakorum. Orkhon Falls are the highest waterfalls in Mongolia.
Day 4 - 95mi
From our waterfalls, we head to “Blue” Hot Springs. It’s a short day but promises loads of excitement. Your highlight just may be the home-cooked meal prepared by the team. Get warm in the hot springs and relax those achy muscles. We will stop in a nomadic home for a little magical dose of local culture.
Day 5 - 145mi
Sadly, we leave the hot springs but head to the beautiful White Lake. This is one of the rare predominantly pavement sections. We are going fast to get to this serene lake. If we get there early enough make sure to hike the volcano nearby. Its not that high but very steep.
Day 6 - 170mi
Incredible cairns dot the shores of White Lake setting a peaceful tone for this section. We ride around the lake to a ger camp seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The camp is 100% solar powered so be prepared with some backup battery power to charge your phone.
Day 7 - 185mi
Another day another beautiful lake. The way to Khyargas Lake is like a mini-Dakar riding day covering a lot of spectacular scenery, sand, and washboard. Maybe take a dip in this amazing lake? This is the only camp on this incredible side of the lake, but it is rustic.
Day 8 - 150mi
Wake up early to hike on the lake cliffs. Go back around the lake to the main road. We head on pavement for a hundred miles and back into the wilderness. Winding trails through mountains bring you to sandy grasslands and a camp at the end of nothing.
Day 9 - 220mi
Hard riding all off-road today. We cross a beautiful mountain pass covered in snow. If you are lucky a snowball fight will break up the day. And then coming out of the hills we make it! 2000km to Ulgii for the Eagle Festival!
Day 14
Say goodbye to your ADV crew. Of course you can stay longer in Mongolia and explore on your own from here. Don’t forget to let us know if you are coming early or staying later so we can make arrangements for you!
Day 10-13
Eagle Festivals or ride in the mountains. The terrain near Ulgii is reminiscent of the entire country you’ve experienced so far. Incredible. You will fly back to Ulaanbataar. Final dinner together to reminisce about the wild experiences you have had together. Don’t forget to tip the local team!
